TALKING POINTS
At least one positive came out of this game for Everett’s fans. For the first time this season the Tips scored during the El Paraiso Mexican Minute, meaning every ticket stub is worth $5 off.
Otherwise, this was pretty much a fiasco for the Tips. Craig Hartsburg back behind the bench for the first time since Oct. 16, an enthusiastic new year’s eve crowd on hand, and before everyone had found their seat Vancouver was ahead 2-0. It didn’t get any better afterwards for Everett, and things came to a boil late in the second period when a line brawl broke out.
Everett just didn’t look like a team that was playing with much purpose. There were spurts of effort, but the effort didn’t seem concentrated on a common goal. Hartsburg echoed those sentiments following the game.
Everett’s goalies didn’t have their best night. Luke Siemens, who has been better than anyone could have asked in the back-up role, was not sharp at the start of the game and allowed goals on the first two shots he faced. He and Kent Simpson combined to stop just 21 of the 27 shots they faced. In fairness, they didn’t receive a lot of help from their defense, which gave up too many odd-man rushes.
The Tips are really missing their absent defensemen. Ryan Murray is doing everything he can, but he’s spending too much time on the ice. Tonight, with Brennan Yadlowski and Evan Morden ejected following the line brawl, Murray must have logged 40 minutes. One more game and the Tips should get Rasmus Rissanen and Nick Walters back from international duty. It can’t come soon enough for Everett.
TURNING POINT
They came 35 seconds apart and they came in the first two minutes of the game. Teal Burns and Matt MacKay scored on Vancouver’s first two shots of the game, and Everett never recovered.
HIT OF THE DAY
In the third period Everett’s Gabe Minville leveled Brendan Gallagher with a huge open-ice hit, causing Brendan Rowinski to jump Minville.
THREE STARS
First star: Rowinski. One goal and one assist, was constantly a thorn in Everett’s side.
Second star: Jordan Martinook, Vancouver. One goal and one assist, used his large frame effectively.
Third star: Mark Segal, Vancouver. 29 saves, he’s given up just one goal in three games against Everett this season.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Spencer Bennett, Vancouver. One goal, a one-man wrecking crew on the penalty kill.
