Community roundup: Ex-Terrace player sets scoring record

Up until Sunday, Western Washington University guard John Allen seemed an unlikely candidate to set a school scoring record.
Through the Vikings’ first nine games this season, the sophomore guard from Brier averaged just 8.7 points, with a modest season-high of 13 in Western’s opener in November.
Those numbers changed dramatically Sunday.
Allen, who attended Mountlake Terrace High School, poured in 43 points — 24 of them coming in the final 8:45 of the first half — as Western wiped out an early 16-point deficit and defeated visiting Simon Fraser, 99-92.
Allen’s point total matched the Carver Gym record for scoring set by Nick Gibbs of Saint Martin’s in 2003 and ranks as the second-highest single-game total in school history. The Vikings’ Ryan Diggs scored 47 points in a 2006 NCAA Division II Tournament game in Seattle.
The big night raised Allen’s scoring average from 8.7 to 12.1.
Allen made 11-of-18 shots from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and made 16 of his 18 free throws. He scored just three points in the first 11 minutes of the game and didn’t have a field goal after the 7:58 mark of the second half, tallying his final 11 points on free throws.
