TALKING POINTS
Why don’t we all just take a moment to catch our collective breaths. That was something else, the wildest game of the season played before a sellout crowd of 8,344 at Comcast Arena. No one’s asking for a refund tonight.
What I saw tonight was Kamikaze hockey. It was non-
stop up-and-down play with little regard for defense and more quality scoring chances than either of these teams probably see in a month. It made for quite the spectacle and it was a lot of fun — for everyone but the coaches.
Tyler Maxwell was the big star tonight, becoming just the second Everett player ever to score four goals in a game. The only other time it happened was on Jan. 24, 2007, when Moises Gutierrez did it in a 9-0 victory at Portland.
A close second was Ryan Harrison. Harrison, playing his first home game since being acquired from Medicine Hat at the trade deadline, made quite the first impression with two goals and two assists. Indeed, the line of Maxwell, Harrison and Landon Ferraro was a house of fire tonight.
And yet the Tips nearly blew it. Everett led 3-0 after dominating the first period, but Seattle stuck with it and took the Tips to the limit. The T-birds never caught Everett, but they did pull within one four different times. This one wasn’t secure until Travis Toomey, who scored twice in the third period to give Seattle hope, was whistled for an elbowing penalty with 28.4 seconds remaining.
But it was a huge victory for Everett. The Tips couldn’t afford to lose back-to-back games against one of the teams they’re battling with for a playoff spot. Now four teams are within two points of one another at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
And oh yeah, a Spokane team the put up 11 goals on the scoreboard comes into town Sunday. More fireworks ahead?
TURNING POINT
Are you kidding? This one had more twists and turns than Hwy 2 going through the Cascades.
HIT OF THE DAY
Not much hitting tonight. This one was all about the offense.
THREE STARS
First star: Maxwell. Oh, he had an assist, too.
Second star: Harrison. Welcome to Everett.
Third star: Ferraro. What slump? Three assists give him eight points in the past five games.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Toomey. Kept the T-birds in it in the third.
