MILL CREEK — The wrestling season started a bit rough for Edmonds-Woodway, but the Warriors finished the dual season on a high note Thursday night with a 49-17 win at Jackson.

The Warriors (4-0 league, 7-2 overall) dropped duals to North-leading Lake Stevens and Marysville-Pilchuck early in the season, but the win over Jackson (2-2, 6-4) means E-W is the Wesco South champ after finishing undefeated against South competition.

“It’s a good thing for the kids,” coach Joe Trieu said. “All the hard work paid off.

“Jackson looked pretty tough. It was a good match.”

Mac Hutchison (145 pounds) had one of the most impressive wins of the night for the Warriors. Hutchison managed eight takedowns in a 17-8 major decision over Ben Bowen.

Even though Anthony Miller dropped his bout with Jackson’s Kenny Haak at 130 pounds, Trieu was impressed with his freshman, who was ahead by eight points before being pinned in the third period.

“Anthony Miller wrestled the match of his life,” Trieu said. “It was good for him to know that he can do it.”

The win gives the Warriors confidence heading into the rest of the season. They hope to improve upon the eight wrestlers they sent to regionals in 2010.

“If we could send 12, I’d be ecstatic,” Trieu said.
