TALKING POINTS
Tonight we witnessed the importance of an effective power play.
The game was tied 1-1 going into the final five minutes, when both teams were awarded a late power play. Prince George scored on its power play to take the lead. Everett not only failed to score on its chance, the Tips gave up a short-hander. The power play has been a weakness for Everett all season long, and tonight we saw how that can affect a result.
Otherwise the Tips played all right. Indeed, leading up to the late power plays Everett had taken control of the game and looked like the team that was going to break the tie. However, the Tips missed on some chances, and Prince George goaltender Ty Rimmer made some excellent saves on others.
This result tightens the playoff race again. Everett, in sixth place, now leads Kamloops by just one point and Prince George by two. Chilliwack remains eight points back in ninth and Seattle is 10 points back in 10th.
TURNING POINT
Each team had a late chance on the power play. The team that converted prevailed.
HIT OF THE DAY
Not a ton of big hits tonight. Prince George’s Shane Pilling had a decent moment late in the second period when he dumped Jari Erricson.
THREE STARS
First star: Rimmer. 34 saves, he was very strong tonight.
Second star: Sena Acolatse, Prince George. Two goals, both big slap shots from the point on the power play.
Third star: Morden. Scored Everett’s lone goal, his first in the WHL, so congratulations!
The Herald’s honorable mention: Rasmus Rissanen, Everett. Continues to play strong in his own end.
