Plant sales sprout all over

Published 12:01 am Thursday, May 5, 2011

This weekend — Mother’s Day weekend — isn’t just a big day for local nurseries.

It’s also the Super Bowl of Snohomish County plant sales, with clubs, high school students and nonprofit organizations gathering in force to share their best and brightest starts as well as prized plants from t

heir yards.

We’re talking perennials and edibles aplenty, and a lot of great deals to benefit charities, local groups, scholarship funds and even school kids who want to tour local colleges.

If you’re looking for a last-minute Mother’s Day present, drive your mom to a plant sale on Saturday or Sunday and take her on a shopping spree. If she’s a garden lover, it might be a dream come true.

Perhaps the largest event in the county is the annual Snohomish County Master Gardener Foundation plant sale this Saturday.

You’ll find not just 4,000 vegetable and herb starts and 5,000 tomato plants, but also eight specialty nurseries selling unusual, hard-to-find plants, all to benefit the local master gardeners and their extensive volunteer work.

Bring a tarp to keep the back of your car clean, arrive early and be prepared for a workout and, at the best sales, occasional lines.

Bring snacks, drinks, warm layered clothes and visions of a hot, gorgeous summer.
