Published 12:01 am Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Lakewood junior tight end Dustin Stanton has made a verbal commitment to accept a football scholarship offer from Oregon State.

High school players may not sign NCAA letters of intent until February, 2012.

“They see his athleticism and skills catching the ball,” Lakewood coach Dan Teet

er said.

The 6-foot-6, 212-pounder was part of a prolific passing offense at Lakewood. He had 19 catches for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

“In the tougher games, we would go to him more,” Teeter said.

Stanton, who would become the first Pac-10 recruit out of Lakewood in Teeter’s six years there, has also received a scholarship offer to play linebacker for the Air Force Academy. Since Stanton made his announcement, California and Washington have also shown some interest, Teeter said.

Dedication

A new scoreboard at the Meadowdale softball field will be dedicated to the memory of former player Ashley Aven, who passed away in August, 2010, after a year-long battle with leukemia. The scoreboard, which was donated to the school by Connectzone of Lynnwood in Aven’s honor, will be dedicated Sunday during the school’s annual whiffleball tournament. The tournament was started last year in Aven’s honor. All proceeds from the event go to the Ahley K. Aven Foundation.

The Lakewood girls golf team, which had placed third in the league during the regular season, leapfrogged frontrunners King’s and Cedarcrest to win its first-ever Cascade Conference championship during the league meet May 9.
