GIVING

Grant funds truck for food bank

The Maltby Food Bank recently received a grant from The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound for the purchase of a new truck.

The 14-foot truck will make deliveries in the community easier.

The fund is an emp

loyee-owned giving program that allows employees to support the needs of local communities.

Additional funding for paint and signs for the truck was provided by Albertsons through the Fueling Fresh Rescue Grant Program.

Naval Air Station helps HOPE center

The crew from the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit from the Naval Air Station of Whidbey Island helped buck hay for the HOPE Therapeutic Riding Center in Langley.

Individuals who helped were Andrew Cummings, Chad Hodges, Dale Cootes, Dales Johnson, Dave Eck, David Suta, Jack Halligan, Jason Snyder, John Klapmeyer, Paul Diego, Ryan Norris and Shannon Campbell.

HONORS

Troop 18 Eagle Scouts honored

Troop 18 Eagle Scouts Joel Hummel, Nicholas Kaide, Alton Clifford, Matt Adams and Kyle Jordan were honored in the Eagle Court of Honor last month.

Hummel, 20, is the son of John and Diane Hummel of Mukilteo. He graduated from Archbishop Murphy High School and is a junior at the University of Washington, pursuing a degree in physiology.

Hummel’s Eagle project was a drainage system for a St. Mary Magdalen school building and required 193 hours and 21 volunteers. He received the Parvuli Dei and Ad Altari Dei religious awards.

Kaide, 18, is the son of Lloyd and Shelley Kaide of Everett. He recently graduated from O’Dea High School in Seattle. Kaide plans to attend Carroll College with an interest in computer science. Kaide’s Eagle project required 29 volunteers, where he worked on a major walkway on the St. Mary Magdalen Parish property. He earned the Parvuli Dei, Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius XII religious awards and Order of the Arrow brotherhood in 2008.

Clifford, 18, is the son of Robert and Juanita Clifford of Everett. He recently graduated from Everett High School where he was the Class of 2011 valedictorian. Clifford received a congressional nomination to the Air Force Academy where he plans to study engineering. For his Eagle project, Clifford designed a brochure to educate visitors about the flora and fauna of Forest Park in Everett and installed signs for the nature trail. It took a total of 175 hours and 20 volunteers to complete. Alton is a recipient of the Parvuli Dei and Ad Altari Dei religious awards.

Adams, 17, is the son of Ray and Ann Adams of Everett. He is an upcoming senior at Archbishop Murphy High School. Adams is on the honor roll and has lettered in cross country and golf. His father is also an Eagle Scout.

Adams’ Eagle Scout project stabilized the entrance to St. John Mission in Mukilteo with new drainage, terracing and planting and required more than 200 hours and 19 volunteers. Adams is a junior assistant scoutmaster and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Adams earned the Parvuli Dei religious award.

Jordan, 18, is the son of Michael and Sheila Jordan of Everett. He recently graduated from Cedar Park Christian High School in Bothell and plans to attend Cascadia Community College to pursue engineering. Jordan is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become an Eagle Scout.

His Eagle project provided cleanup and repairs of the Battery Van Horne at Fort Casey, Whidbey Island.

Women Making Difference winners

The Soroptimist International of Marysville recently awarded the 2011 Women Making Difference winners. Soroptimist past president, Rosie Reynaud, presented awards to three winners.

Heather Folden received the Women’s Opportunity Award. Folden is a single mother of two and is working toward a degree in nursing. The scholarship program was created in 1972 to help women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families.

Justine Saxton received the Violet Richardson Award. Saxton is a student at Monroe High School. Saxton was awarded $500 and an additional $500 for the charity Kloz 4 Kidz, where she has volunteered for the past two years.

Ardyce Johnson received the Ruby Award. Johnson is president of her church women’s group and volunteers at Kloz 4 Kidz, Cocoon House and reads to students at Kellogg Marsh Elementary School in Marysville. Johnson donated her $500 award to Kloz 4 Kidz and the Koinonia women’s organization.

Veterans group retires U.S. flags

Free Reserve Association, Branch 170 recently held a flag retirement ceremony.

A total of 12 American flags were properly destroyed during the ceremony, said retired veteran Erv Hoglund.

The ceremony will become an annual event.

Local students serve as legislative pages

Four county students recently served as legislative pages.

Joseph Thompson of Everett, a St. Mary Magdalen School eighth-grader, served with Rep. Mike Sells, D-Everett.

Matt Althoff of Tulalip, a freshman at Marysville Getchell High School, and Michelle Magbag of Everett, an Immaculate Conception eighth-grader, served with Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip.

Margo Pin of Everett, a Kamiak High School sophomore, served with Rep. Luis Moscoso, D-Mountlake Terrace.
