EPA recalls Puget Sound Partnership funds

SEATTLE — The Environmental Protection Agency is asking the Puget Sound Partnership to return more than $120,000 in grants because the EPA said the agency’s internal controls against fraud are weak.

KUOW reported that an EPA report said the Partnership has been careless in tracking and spending funds.

An EPA review of contracts from 2007 to 2009 found “a near total lack of certification” that the agency actually received the goods and services for which it paid.

The EPA found no evidence of fraud, but officials said the Partnership’s consistent lack of internal controls is a risk.

The Puget Sound Partnership will not appeal the EPA findings. Officials say it has revamped the way it does business to ensure contracts and expenditures are well-documented.
