Monroe beats Mariner to earn Wesco No. 3 seed

Published 11:39 pm Friday, October 28, 2011

EVERETT — Hunter Bingham passed for three touchdowns to help lead Monroe back from a 14-10 deficit and eventually claim a 37-22 win over Mariner. The win gave the Bearcats the No. 3 seed in Wesco 4A as the quad-district playoffs kick off next week.

The Bearcats did a decent job of bottling up the Mariner ground attack which netted 234 yards, but most importantly, limited the Marauders to just one big play — KeiVarae Russell’s 67-yard run. Russell finished with 181 yards on 21 carries with one rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown. He connected with Chris Knowles on a 18-yard pass in the fourth quarter to cut the Monroe lead to 24-22.

Six Mariner penalties for 51 yards and a disappointing 4-for-12 on third down conversions, were other key factors in the loss.
