Prep girls soccer: Lake Stevens 1, Eastlake 0

LAKE STEVENS — Lake Stevens earned a 4A state berth by defeating Eastlake 1-0, Saturday afternoon.

Hannah Huesers scored in the 15th minute on an assist from Ciara Carter. Carter received the ball at about midfield out on the flank, dribbled down and then dished to Huesers, who shot from 12-yards out. Huesers goal was a rarity as Eastlake had allowed just 12 goals in its previous 19 games.

“They have a very stingy defense so … finishing when we did was super important,” Lake Stevens head coach Andy Knutson said.

With the goal in hand, Lake Stevens played a defensive game to keep a team that has had trouble scoring goals all year off the scoreboard. They were able to do just that, with keeper Kiaya Paulson making several plays that disrupted Eastlake scoring chances before they developed.

“We tried to preserve the victory and it got a little hairy as it always does,” Knutson said. “Paulson did a terrific job of making plays and disrupting their chances.”
