Guardando bene
There was more bad news Friday for Italy’s already-shaky economy, as a large increase in the nation’s borrowing rate intensified fears of bankruptcy — and, most likely, disapproving looks from Germany.
Depressed after the dismal day, Italy tried to cheer itself up by buying a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo calfskin loafers and a Brioni pinstripe suit.
Outta my way: Shoppers’ eagerness to snag deals on merchandise occasionally got out of hand across the nation Friday, including one incident in which a woman reportedly used pepper spray to get ahead of people waiting to buy Xboxes at a Walmart.
Impressed store management immediately offered her a job on their security detail.
Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1941, the U.S. secretary of state met with Japan’s ambassador to propose an agreement for “lasting and extensive peace”.
Also on this day in 1941, a Japanese naval task force set sail for Hawaii, which explains the ambassador’s reeaction: “Ummm, I’ll have to get back to you on that.”
