Hangover, Part III

Published 8:02 pm Friday, December 30, 2011

You put the lime in the coconut: If you’re planning on imbibing for New Year’s Eve and hoping to avoid or cure a hangover, British researchers say the only sure method is to avoid getting drunk in the first place. An exhaustive study of various remedies, including drugs and dietary supplements found nothing that proved effective.

Researchers said they would turn their attention to finding a way to block the blinding smugness of those not suffering through hangovers.

Can you hear me now? Verizon Wireless, just a day after announcing it would charge a $2 “convenience fee” for one-time online and phone payments, reversed itself. Verizon joins a growing list of companies, including Netflix and Bank of America, who attempted to increase rates or add new fees, only to backtrack under public pressure.

This complaining thing works so well with companies, maybe we ought to try it out on Congress.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1879, Thomas Edison first publicly demonstrated his electric incandescent light in Menlo Park, N.J.

The crowd, having started New Year celebrations early and already suffering hangovers, yelled at Edison to “turn the damned contraption off.”
