It’s a new year and the Snohomish wrestling team has hit the mat running.
After a big win over Monroe on Wednesday, the Panthers are gearing up for a showdown with rival Lake Stevens tonight at 7 p.m. at Snohomish H.S. Snohomish will then turn around host the Panther Classic, a 16-team tournament that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
“This is the fifth year in a row that we’ll wrestle Lake Stevens and turn around and have the Panther Classic the next day,” said Snohomish wrestling coach Rob Zabel. “It has definitely made for some long evenings.
“But I think our kids will be ready to compete.”
First up, though, Snohomish must take on Lake Stevens, the third-ranked team in the state according to Dave Gilbertson’s Washington Wrestling Report.
“It’s always fun to butt heads with Brent (Barnes),” Zabel said of the Lake Stevens wrestling coach. “(Tonight) is a good opportunity for us to see how far we’ve come and it’s a good measuring stick for where we’re at as a program.”
