On this day in 1798, a brawl broke out in the U.S. House of Representatives after a congressman from Vermont spat in the face of a colleague from Connecticut.

There haven’t been any fisticuffs in Congress since senators Benjamin Tillman and John L. McLaurin squared off in 1902 — yet another sign of how far our federal government has strayed from the Founding Fathers’ vision.

Bummer of a party: The world’s leading business and political figures concluded their annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland, on a somber note Sunday after five days of gloomy discussions about the eurozone crisis and growing inequality across the globe.

Even so, The Associated Press reports that plenty of champagne still flowed at the ultra-ritzy Alpine ski resort. How else can the world’s elites take their minds off the big fat mess they’ve made?
