E-W senior earns scholarship
Katarina Nguyen, a senior at Edmonds-Woodway High School, took second place in the 75th annual statewide Constitutional Speech Contest on Feb. 4 in Pasco.
The competition, sponsored in each state by the American Legion, is open to any public, private, or home-schooled student in ninth through 12th grades. A dozen students from Washington met the challenges to be certified locally.
In addition to receiving the $1,500 scholarship, Nguyen was also awarded a silver medal and a certificate by American Legion officials Jake Cabaug, Washington state department commander, and by Mervin Gunderson, western region national vice commander.
Nguyen is the daughter of Anthony and Tina Nguyen of Lynnwood. Her parents and grandmother, Hiep Chung, were in the audience to support her at the contest.
She plans to deliver her oration again in a combined meeting with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion. She is also scheduled to speak at the annual Edmonds Memorial Day Ceremony.
