Ag mechanics team wins competitions
The Stanwood High School Agricultural Mechanics Team has competed in two local contests so far this year and is gearing up for districts and the state contests in April.
The team took first place in competitions held at Mount Baker High School and Burlington-Edison High School. They have competed in arc welding, MIG welding, small gas engines, electric motors, electric motor controls, surveying, water quality, concrete, and ventilation. The contest consists of a 90 question knowledge test, a 30 question problem solving test, and six hands-on skills.
The team members are: Hollie Danielson, Maggie Danielson, Myles Dicerchio, Curtis Flake, Andy Funderburke, Colton Gilfeather, Stephanie Hampton, Marissa Hanson, Tristan Heckman, Katelyn Marlow, Felicia Newton, Austin O’Neill, Ashley Rich, Troy Rimat, Brandon Robertson, Cassie Rosentiel, Leif Small, Pat Swanson, Jason Taylor, Nate Thompson and Brad VanDuker.
Schools donate jeans for homeless youth
Families in the Lake Stevens School District donated 1,195 pairs of jeans to the fifth annual Teens for Jeans campaign.
Cavelero Mid-High, Glenwood Elementary, Highland Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Lake Stevens High School, Lake Stevens Middle School, North Lake Middle School, Skyline Elementary, and the District Office participated in this year’s campaign that collects the donations for homeless youth throughout the United States and Canada.
Students speak on human trafficking
Marysville Mountain View High School recently attended the Family, Career, Community Leaders of America meeting at the Shoreline Conference Center.
Six students took part in leadership training where they met with students from more than 15 other schools. Two of our students were asked to give a presentation on the topic of human trafficking to the over 120 students in attendance. Seniors Stephanie Neel and Hailey Spooner were responsible for the 30-minute presentation.
Students qualify for state competition
Twenty-six Granite Falls High School students attended the Future Business Leaders of America Regional competition on Feb. 14 in Stanwood.
At the competition, students competed in various business competitions and networked with students from other regional schools.
Fifteen students qualified to participate in the State Leadership Conference, which will be held in April in Seattle.
Students that will participate in the state competition include: Brandon Cole, Cheney Hess, Miranda Meier, Katelyn Campbell, Erin Hurn, Victoria Schmidt-Long, Chryssy Dolan, Emily Schneiders, Pooja Sethi, Austin Bailey, Katelyn Goodman, Aakash Sethi, Cierra Scown, Anniemae Baker and Luis Torres.
Monroe grad wins academic honor
Brian Sutter, a 2009 graduate of Monroe High School, was named by U.S. track and field and cross country coaches this year’s Academic All American athlete at Claremont McKenna College.
Sutter is currently a junior and government major at the college, Washington, D.C. program. He is on the NCAA Division III track and field team.
To earn this recognition, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better and have placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships. Sutter has participated in the NCAA DII Cross Country National Championship race three years in a row. He also competed in conference championships for track and field in 2010 and 2011.
After graduation, Sutter wants to pursue a degree in environmental law or a s master’s degree in public policy.
Catholic students win essay contest
Three winners have been chosen from among 70 students from the two Everett Catholic grade schools who entered the Catholic Daughters of the Americas St. Rita Court No. 957 essay contest.
Students from Immaculate Conception and St. Mary Magdalen schools submitted essay on the themes of “Planting Seeds of Faith” or “Inspiring Others to Grow.”
Brenna O’Kelley, eighth-grader at Immaculate Conception school, received $50 as the first place winner. Emily Olson, eighth-grader at St. Mary Magdalen school received $30 for second place. Liz Judge, an eighth-grader at St. Mary Magdalen school, received $20 for third place.
