Let’s translate what the third annual Evergreen Recreation and Sportsmen Expo actually means:
Carnival. Championship barbecue. Kid’s fishing pond.
In other words: family fun.
And think of the expo as a prelude to the Evergreen State Fair with lots of vendors and fair food selections reminiscent of summer.
The Evergreen Recreation &Sportsmen Expo kicks off with the Funtastic Carnival from 4 to 9 tonight at the fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. SE, Monroe.
The expo continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free; carnival rides are 50 cents per ticket.
The carnival kicks off tonight, then opens again at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and the rides include some favorites such as the Zipper, the Super Orbiter and the Inverter.
Free events include the Kid’s Trout Pond where first-time anglers and youngsters get to catch and keep a live trout. All the gear is provided by Les Schwab and the Everett Steelhead Club for kids 12 and under.
It’s also free to watch and learn at the Washington State Spring BBQ Championship where teams from across the Pacific Northwest vie, toe to tongs, for cash and the chance to go to the Jack Daniels Invitation BBQ Championships.
There are also samples for purchase as Bad Draw Wrestling sells pulled-pork and raffle tickets for a chance to win a rack of ribs.
Free barbecue classes will be held at center stage. Classes and demonstrations start on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; classes are 30 to 45 minutes long.
If the championship makes you hungry, the expo will have a sampling of summertime fair food including curly fries, corn dogs, kettle corn and elephant ears.
Dozens of vendors will be on hand to offer various recreational activities, family getaways and lots of outdoor products, from boutique dog leashes to survival gear.
