Some notes from today

– Nice little touch with the first ever Volunteers Cup, which was given to the victorious team from scrimmages, in this case the Red team. The Cup will be dedicated in honor of a different individual associated with the Tips each year. This year it was in honor of the late Dave Piland, Everett’s former public address announcer. Piland’s family was on hand to present the Cup.

– Winger Trent Lofthouse continued his rampage through camp, scoring two more goals in the first-place scrimmage to show Saturday’s efforts weren’t a fluke. But late in the first period of the Green vs. Grey Game he was crunched into the boards by Mirco Mueller and skated off slowly. He returned in the second period, but sat out the third.

– Two players who had good days were Kyle Raymond and Taylor Sanheim. Both are 16-year-old forwards from whom I didn’t know what to expect, and both seemed to get better as they found a comfort level. Raymond has a chance to be a beast with his 6-foot-5 frame, and Sanheim showed off a nice shot.

– With Raymond and Sanheim added to the already impressive trio of Ty Mappin, Dawson Leedahl and Tyler Sandhu, I think this is the best collection of 16-year-old forwards I’ve ever seen at Silvertips training camp.

– Tough decisions to be made on defense, particularly with the 17-year-old group. How many of those five 17-year-olds, all of whom showed something, the Tips decide to keep will determine the make-up of Everett’s defense this season.

– Goaltender Andy Desautels had a rough camp from a physical standpoint as he got bowled over twice during scrimmages. Lucas Grayson got him this morning and although Desautels was down for a bit and came out of the game, he seemed all right as he skated off the ice. It did take him out of the Green vs. Grey Game, however.

– No real surprises in the roster trimming. Goaltender Troy Trombley and forwards Stefan Burzan and Tre Potskin were the only invitees to advance. Everyone else, with perhaps the exception of list forward Jan Tesarek, is someone you probably would have predicted to advance prior to camp. No surprise omissions, either.
