SNOHOMISH — Glacier Peak couldn’t hold off sixth-ranked Newport, which bounced back to sweep the match’s final three sets to beat the Grizzlies 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 26-24, 15-9 in a non-league match Tuesday night at Glacier Peak.

“Newport just started making adjustments,” said Grizzlies head coach Christopher Pratt. “Before (the third set) our defense did a good job, but their back line started talking more. They started to figure out our style and we were slow to react.”

The game’s fourth set was the most competitive of the night with Glacier Peak unable to win match point.

“We were up 24-23 (in the fourth set),” added Pratt. “They just kept chipping away and we couldn’t get that final point to put them away. Their serving and aces were just too much for us.”

Pratt also admitted that his team may have been slightly tired after last night’s five-set battle against Oak Harbor, but also noted that Newport may have been thrown off early in the first two sets.

“It was almost as if Newport wasn’t used to playing in a gym this big,” Pratt said. “Their serves were going long, but again they made the proper adjustments.”

Despite the close loss the Grizzlies had stand-out performances from seniors Ruby Mensing, who had four aces to go along with her 13 kills and 25 digs, and Reanna Jarchow, who had 32 assists.
