MUKILTEO — In a showdown between top contenders from the “South,” Kamiak from Wesco 4A South and Glacier Peak from 3A South, the Grizzlies showed Tuesday night that classification isn’t everything.

Glacier Peak (5-1 overall) swept Kamiak (3-1) in three games 25-18, 25-23, 25-17, serving the Knights their first loss of the year. More costly however, may be the loss of senior setter

Danielle Smullin, who suffered an unspecified hip injury.

“She runs the court,” Kamiak coach Natalie Bowie said of her captain. “She’s a part of what makes our team great. It’s a tough loss.”

The Knights had an 11-3 edge in the third game before Smullin went down. Bowie wouldn’t speculate on a timetable for her return. Smullin had 17 assists on the night.

The Kamiak coach didn’t attribute the loss solely to the injury. She was impressed with Glacier Peak.

“They are a strong team,” Bowie said. “I’d say they’d be one to watch.”

Ruby Mensing lead the Grizzlies with 14 kills and Reanna Jarchow had a match-high 27 assists. Maria Darling paced the GP defense with 16 digs.

The two teams battled two a close second game with the Grizzlies holding on in the end.

“It was fun because it was quick scoring on both sides,” Bowie said of the game.

Leading the Knights attack was Madison Young with eight kills and Sara Pulaski chipped in 21 digs.

Though wary of Smullin’s loss, Bowie and the Knights are ready for Wesco 4A play to begin.

“We are excited to get in to league,” Bowie said. “Now we really need to get after it.”
