At least 18 deaths in Snohomish County in 2012 were ruled homicides. That figure doesn’t include pending death investigations, or deaths from car accidents that may be prosecuted as vehicular homicides.

Homicide is a medical term for a death that resulted from the action of another person. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office determines the medical reason someone died. Whether that’s murder, manslaughter or another kind of crime is decided in the courts.

In 2011, at least 11 deaths here were deemed homicides. Most of the victims were men. Among the common contributing circumstances are drug trafficking and domestic violence.

About 714,000 people live in Snohomish County and roughly 4,500 die each year. While the number of homicides in 2012 was roughly double the previous year, it is still incredibly rare.

Two of the homicides in 2012 involved children: the 7-year-old Camano Island girl who was shot by her 3-year-old brother in the family’s van in Stanwood in March, and the Tulalip toddler who died from parental neglect on the reservation in October. Two more of the homicides were men killed by homeowners during alleged break-ins. Another man died in a shoot-out with officers near Arlington.

Several of the 2012 homicides remain under investigation. At least four were drug-related, and at least four were domestic-violence-related. Ten of the deaths involved firearms. In 2012, only one of the county’s homicides happened within the Everett city limits, compared to almost half of the homicides in 2011.

Not included on the 2012 homicide list is Harold Caywood, 91. He died weeks after being beaten and mugged outside a south Everett gas station. His cause of death has not been determined. The investigation continues.
