SHORELINE — The Glacier Peak boys soccer team dealt Shorecrest its first league loss of the season 2-1 and leapfrogged the Scots to move into second place in the Wesco 3A South. The race for the league title is still neck-and-neck between the Grizzlies, Shorecrest and current leader Shorewood.

Michael Mikusky got Glacier Peak on the board quickly, scoring in just the seventh minute on a Branson Corwin assist. Then the Grizzlies almost pulled away, nearly scoring on a penalty kick in the 20th minute that was saved by Shorecrest goalkeeper Sam Schober.

The Scots managed to tie it up just before halftime on a Chris Iacolucci goal. Alex Chang had the assist.

The final goal of the game came just after the break. The Grizzlies had a free kick on the left side from 30 to 35 yards out. Peter Vizzoni swung it in. Schober came out to try and clear the ball, with Glacier Peak’s offense moving in. The ball came straight down and Matt Johnston was able to put it in the net.

Shorecrest turned up the pressure the rest of the second half, but the Grizzlies were able to hang on with the help of keeper Lucas MacMillan.

“There were a lot of long balls that we were either able to deal with with a header, or Lucas was able to deal with at some point,” said Glacier Peak head coach Shannon Murray.

Murray was glad to get the win in what has been a very competetive league.

“We can beat each other up all year. … We’ve kind of gone through the gamut. We’ve got three tough opponents ahead of us, but were in a position to see where we finish in a good spot.

“It’s a very competetive season. It’s fun that way. I like it.”
