Arlington: Swing Into Spring in May

Arlington High School Jazz Bands’ annual Swing Into Spring Dessert Dance is planned for 7 p.m. May 10 and 11 at the school’s Commons, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.

The Commons will be transformed into the “Easy G Jazz Club,” featuring the On Hold and Jazz II jazz bands.

Tickets will be available at the door, but it is recommended to reserve table seating in advance, from May 2-4, at Arlington Copy, Mail &More, 526 N. West Ave. in downtown Arlington, 360-435-4900. Tickets: $12 for music, dancing, dessert and beverages.

Edmonds: City gets school safety grant

The city has been selected to receive a Safe Routes to School grant of $494,000 to support its Madrona Elementary Walkway project.

Construction of this sidewalk will improve safety and convenience for both school children and other pedestrians walking or biking to and from Madrona elementary.

These funds will be used to design and build approximately 600 feet of curb, gutter, and sidewalk on the south side of 236th Street SW connecting Madrona Elementary School to Highway 104.

The design of the project is scheduled to begin this summer and construction is planned for summer 2014.

Lake Stevens: Spot open on civil panel

The city is seeking a volunteer for one vacancy on the Police Civil Service Commission.

Interested applicants must complete and submit an application to be considered for an interview by the mayor.

The commission holds evening meetings, as needed, at 6 p.m. the fourth Monday of the month. The commission focuses on the selection, appointment, promotion and employment of police officers except the police chief.

Marysville: Voice classes offered

Youths can learn to sing and discover their voices in a class being offered in Marysville by instructor Robin Hilt.

Classes are offered for children ages 7 to 12 and teens ages 13 to 17. Sessions are five weeks beginning May 2. The class cost is $50 with a $10 material fee.

All classes are held at the Ken Baxter Community Center, 514 Delta Ave. Pre-registration is required.

Monroe: Author to speak to writers

Bestselling author Susan Wingate plans to speak about her books and the craft of writing at 4:30 p.m. May 1 at the Junior Monroe Wednesday Writers and again at the Monroe Wednesday Writers group at 7 p.m. at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way.

Main Street Books in Monroe will have copies of her novels for sale.

Oak Harbor: Salmon barbecue

The Oak Harbor Lions Club plans to serve barbecue salmon during Holland Happening Weekend, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 32630 Highway 20, in the park next to the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

All proceeds benefit adults and children in the community who cannot afford vision care.
