Mukilteo Library lines up winter-break activities for kids

MUKILTEO — They call it the winter extravaganza.
The Mukilteo Library has a full slate of programs for children when schools close for winter break later this month.
The sessions have been plenty popular over the years, children’s librarian Katherine Combs said.
“We usually get an average of 40 kids and a handful of adults,” she said. “The library is more or less like a community center. It goes beyond traditional library services.”
The programs include making designs in gingerbread, movie watching and movie making and demonstrations with liquid oxygen.
Here’s what’s on tap:
The Gingerbread Story is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 20. Children will learn stories beyond “Hansel &Gretel” and “The Gingerbread Man” and create their own gingerbread design to devour.
The Pacific Science Center Super Cool Science is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 21. Kids will get a chance to discover what happens when things get super cool with liquid nitrogen. They’ll get to watch as gases become liquids, liquids become solids and matter fizzes, freezes and flies.
A movie billed as a frightfully fun Disney-Pixar production for all ages is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 26.
Clay animation with Lukas Allenbaugh is set for 2 p.m. Monday. The program, for children 7 and older, gives kids a chance to make their own movies using stop-motion animation with clay figures. The event is sponsored by the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation, but participants should register in advance because of limited space.
A crafts session begins at 1 p.m. followed by a movie at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2.
A session dubbed marshmallow world is set for 2 p.m. Jan. 3. It’s described as fun experiments with candy and other treats.
