Plants of merit: Chamaecyparis pisifera

WHAT: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Snow’: Botanical names such as this make us appreciate the availability of common names.

Snow False Cypress is easily remembered and aptly describes this white-tipped, blue-green knockout.

All the beauty of snow touched leaves without the hassle, it creates that coveted winterland look in the garden. In contrast, the bark is a reddish brown color.

Snow is native to southern Japan and grows beautifully in a large pot as well as in the garden.

Good drainage is vital to its health no matter which planting option is chosen.

SUN OR SHADE: Part shade produces the white tips while full sun would turn the needles blue-green.

SIZE: A mature shrub will reach 6 feet by 6 feet, but it is a very slow growing plant, putting on a mere 2- to 4-inches per year. This should be kept in mind when purchasing.
