GOLD BEACH, Ore. — Curry County has declared a state of emergency over the weekend storm that caused more than $1 million in damages to the port of Port Orford.
The County Commission signed a resolution Tuesday asking the governor for a state declaration that would open the way to state and federal help in repairing the damages.
High winds and large waves pounded the port on Saturday, enlarging a breach in the breakwater that protects the harbor channel and damaging a restaurant, fish buyer facilities, port offices and the fueling system that supplies the 50-boat fishing fleet. No lives or boats were lost.
The resolution notes that the port is a vital part of the economy of the southern Oregon coast.
