Sniff: How to hunt truffles with your dog
Alana McGee discusses truffle hunting with your dog at the next meeting of the Snohomish County Mycological Society, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Baker Community Center, 1401 Poplar St., Everett.

Dress up: Mommy-son costume party
A Monster Mash mother-son event is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Floral Hall in Forest Park, 802 E Mukilteo Blvd., Everett.
Mothers, grandmothers and aunties are invited to bring their boys of all ages to this costume party that includes dancing, snacks and a souvenir photo.
Tickets are $29 per mother-child pair and $6 for each additional son. Registration is required.
The new event was inspired by the successful daddy-daughter dance held each February near Valentine’s Day.

Drill: Shake Out focuses on earthquakes
The Great Washington ShakeOut “drop, cover and hold” earthquake drill event is set for 10:15 a.m. Oct. 15.
Individuals, families, businesses and others are encouraged to practice what they need to do to be safe at home, work or school in the event of an earthquake.

Benefit: Buy early ticket for Heritage Days
Early-bird ticket prices are extended for the upcoming Heritage Days banquet and auction to benefit the Edmonds Historical Museum. Tickets are $65 before Oct. 20 and go up to $70 afterward.
The event is set for 5:30-9 p.m. Nov. 13 at Holy Rosary Parish Hall, 630 Seventh Ave. N, Edmonds. Tickets are available online, by phone, or in person at the Museum, 118 Fifth Ave. N (open 1-4 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday).

Hear: Author Deb Caletti to speak
The Mukilteo Schools Foundation’s annual fundraising breakfast will feature a presentation by local author Deb Caletti, a National Book Award finalist who writes both adult and young adult fiction.
The event is set for 7:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Future of Flight gallery, 8415 Paine Field Blvd., Mukilteo. Tickets are $50.

Win: Enter essay contest for book nerds
The Edmonds Library holds an essay contest, “Why Today’s Modern Library is My Friend,” with entries of 500 words or less accepted in three age groups (ages 9-12, ages 13-19, and ages 50 and older) through Oct. 31. The top prize is a Kindle Fire, including lessons from a librarian on how to set it up with library resources.
An awards ceremony will be held during the Library Tech Fair Open House on Nov. 14. The contest is sponsored by the Friends of the Edmonds Library. Prizes were funded by Symetra Financial.
