Keep storm drains clear of leaves

Published 9:32 am Wednesday, October 14, 2015

It’s that time of year again.

Local public works departments are encouraging folks to help keep storm drains clear of leaves as trees turn their autumn hues.

Falling leaves combined with heavy rains can quickly clog drains and spur local flooding. Leaf debris can be added to municipal yard waste bins. In general, leaves should not be swept or blown into streets.

Bothell offers an Adopt-A-Drain program, which seeks volunteers to keep at least four storm drains clear in local neighborhoods. The program provides volunteers with extra yard waste bags. Learn more at www.bothellcool.org.

For their part, cities are preparing to step up street sweeping schedules.
