Brycen Martin joins Everett Silvertips for Tuesday’s practice

Brycen Martin didn’t waste any time getting to Everett after learning he had been traded to the Silvertips.
The 19-year-old defenseman drove from Saskatoon home to Calgary, jumped on a plane to Abbotsford, B.C., and arrived at Xfinity Arena in time for practice Tuesday.
So how did his first skate go?
“Out there I was a little lost because it’s a lot to take in in one day, but I’m sure I’ll catch on eventually,” Martin said. “I’m just looking forward to my time here.”
It sounds likely that Martin will play in Wednesday’s game against Tri-City with defenseman Kevin Davis out.
Looking a little more in the future, Noah Juulsen is headed to Team Canada’s World Junior Championship Selection Camp next week, at which point the Tips will be without Juulsen at least until Christmas.
If Juulsen makes the team he’ll be gone even longer, and Everett head coach Kevin Constantine acknowledged that was a factor in acquiring Martin.
“We’re going to miss him, but for his career and for the kid you hope he makes that team,” Constantine said. “You pull Juulsen out of the group of seven and then all of a sudden you have an injury and all of a sudden you’ve got five ‘D.’ So that was another thought process as part of the trade, was covering for injuries and covering for Juulsen’s absence.”
Other WHL invitees to the selection camp include defensemen Haydn Fleury (Red Deer), Joe Hicketts (Victoria) and Travis Sanheim (Calgary), and forwards Mathew Barzal (Seattle), Rourke Chartier (Kelowna), Jayce Hawryluk (Brandon), Nick Merkley (Kelowna), Brayden Point (Moose Jaw) and John Guerneville (Brandon).
Other tidbits:
– Tuesday was a quick session for the Tips who were on the ice just more than an hour in anticipation of Wednesday’s home game against Tri-City. Dawson Leedahl (ankle) and Davis did not practice, though both took turns riding the stationary bike on the concourse while watching practice.
– Goaltender Carter Hart earned his second career CHL Goaltender of the Week and his first career WHL Goaltender of the Month awards Tuesday. That’s in addition to being named the WHL Goaltender of the Week for the second this season on Monday. You keeping all that straight? That’s a lot of plaques… Or certificates… Or whatever they receive.
