The Vancouver Canadians scored eight runs in the first two innings of a 10-7 win against the Everett AquaSox at Nat Bailey Stadium on Tuesday, snapping Everett’s six-game win streak.
Vancouver (35-47 overall, 8-8 second-half) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double from infielder Eric Snow, who scored two batters later when infielder Peyton Williams reached on a fielder’s choice to first. Everett (43-39, 10-6) put two runners on in the second before Carter Dorighi grounded into an inning-ending double play, and Canadians designated hitter Alex Stone led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to push the lead to 4-0.
AquaSox starter Taylor Dollard allowed two more home runs in the second, as outfielder Sam Shaw and Williams each hit a two-run blast to push the lead to 8-0. Dollard remained in for two more scoreless innings, but ended his night with 10 hits, eight earned runs and four strikeouts to drop to 2-7 on the season.
Infielder Luis Suisbel put Everett on the board with a solo homer in the top of the fourth, but Vancouver infielder Kendry Chirinos extended the lead to 9-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The AquaSox outscored the Canadians 6-1 over the final four innings, but it would not be enough. Suisbel cut it to 9-3 in the sixth with his second home run of the evening, a two-run shot to right field, and catcher Josh Caron made it 9-5 with a two-run homer of his own in the seventh. The 22-year-old’s 16th long ball of the season put him alone atop the Northwest League leaderboard.
Everett reliever Sam Whiting hit catcher Edward Duran with a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh, and he walked three of the next five batters to let Vancouver score another run.
The AquaSox scored two more runs in the eighth with an RBI groundout from outfielder Anthony Donofrio following infielder Austin St. Laurent’s leadoff triple, and an RBI single from outfielder Jonny Farmelo. Designated hitter Luke Stevenson and shortstop Felnin Celesten each worked a walk to load the bases with one out, putting the go-ahead run at the plate, but Canadians reliever Jonathan Todd struck out Caron and got infielder Brandon Eike to fly out to protect the 10-7 lead.
Todd returned for the ninth, where he retired the side to secure the win. Suisbel went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, and St. Laurent went 3-for-4 with one run scored for Everett. Shaw went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored for Vancouver.
The two teams will face each other again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. PT.
