Bellevue firm hired for final design of light rail line to Lynnwood

SNOHOMISH COUNTY — Sound Transit announced Monday that’s it’s moving ahead with a contract for the final design of the 8.5-mile Link light rail extension from Northgate to Lynnwood.
A Bellevue firm, HNTB Jacobs Trusted Design Partners, is to receive $73.7 million for the work.
The Sound Transit Board last year chose the alignment and new station locations for the route. Trains would run along the I-5 corridor, stopping at the Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace transit centers. Trains also would stop at NE 185th and 145th streets in Shoreline.
Building the Lynnwood Link extension is estimated to cost $2.3 billion, including federal funds. Leaders at Sound Transit expect to establish a final budget in 2017 and to start construction in 2018. Service would begin in 2023, two years after the line is scheduled to reach Northgate.

Separately, the Sound Transit Board has been studying a $50 billion November ballot measure called Sound Transit 3 that would extend light rail service to Everett in 2041, years after reaching Tacoma or the Seattle neighborhoods of Ballard and West Seattle. The agency has scheduled public comment meetings, including one at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 25.
