EVERETT — Kyle Lewis made sure to cap his first homestand with the Everett AquaSox in impressive fashion.
The Seattle Mariners’ first-round draft pick drove in five runs as the Sox demolished the visiting Boise Hawks 13-1 before 2,176 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium Monday to close out their season-opening homestand with four wins in five games against Boise (3-8).
Lewis finished 2-for-4, and his bases-clearing double off the center field wall pushed across the final three runs for the Frogs in the bottom of the seventh. His RBI single in the third snapped an 0-for-9 skid.
Jake Brentz struck out nine while allowing one run on four hits in 42⁄3 innings for Everett (7-4).
Already leading 2-1, the Frogs broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Grebeck had a two-run single, Kristian Brito added a two-run double, and Jose Leal also had an RBI double in the inning as Everett took an 8-1 lead.
The Frogs put together another big inning with five runs in the seventh. Leal and Jordan Cowan had RBI singles before Lewis delivered the big hit to make it 13-1.
Cowan led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder’s choice from Lewis to give the AquaSox a 1-0 lead. Lewis also drove in Everett’s second run with an RBI single to right field that scored Jhombeyker Morales in the bottom of the third.
The Hawks scored their only run in the top of the fourth when Luis Castro led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Stephens.
Cowan, Zamarelli and Leal all finished with two hits for the Frogs. Grebeck, Brito and Leal all finished with two runs batted in for the night.
Left-hander Luiz Gohara, (1-0, 0.00 earned run average), starts for Everett tonight as the AquaSox begin a six-game road trip at Spokane at 6:30.
