SPOKANE — Hours after being named the best player in college baseball, Everett AquaSox outfielder Kyle Lewis got the night off.
However, the Frogs’ offense continued to fire on all cylinders without him.
With Lewis, the Seattle Mariners first-round pick who was named the Golden Spikes award winner as the top collegiate baseball player in the country, not in the lineup, Everett still continued its recent offensive firepower.
Lewis, who played at tiny Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, beat Clemson outfielder Seth Beer, Louisville outfielder Corey Ray and Florida right-handed pitcher Logan Shore for the Golden Spikes, which is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation.
Lewis was announced as the winner on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
Everett scored seven or more runs for the fifth time in its last six games as the AquaSox built an early lead and held off Spokane 8-5 Thursday night at Avista Stadium.
Kristian Brito hit a three-run home run in the first and the Frogs added another run on an RBI single by Johmbeyker Morales before the end of the inning to give the AquaSox an early 5-0 lead.
However, Spokane got back in the game in the bottom of the second with four runs off Everett starter Ljay Newsome.
Joselito Cano (2-0) came in to get the final out and pitched 2.2 innings to earn his second victory of the season.
Paul Covelle also tossed 2.2 innings and Elliot Surrey pitched the final two innings to earn his first save of the year.
Everett added two runs in the fourth inning on a pair of RBI singles by Austin Grebeck and Nick Thurman and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when Eric Filia singled in a run for the game’s final tally.
Morales batted 4-for-5 and Jordan Cowan went 3-for-5 for the AquaSox.
Grebeck (2-for-3) and Johan Quevedo (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games for Everett, which improved to 9-5 and remained atop the Northwest League’s North Division standings with Tri-City.
The AquaSox begin a three-game series with the Dust Devils on Friday before returning home for an eight-game homestand.
