BOISE — The Everett AquaSox got a brilliant start from Robert Dugger, but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead as the Frogs fell 5-3 to the Boise Hawks in Northwest League baseball action Monday before 2,464 fans at Memorial Stadium.
Everett (22-9 second half, 40-29 overall) lost its second straight. Boise improved to 14-17 and 30-39.
The Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Everett’s Paul Covelle allowed two hits and two walks to force in a run. He was relieved by Elliot Surrey, who surrendered a two-run single to Willie Abreu as the Hawks took their first lead of the game at 4-3. Surrey then balked in the game’s final run.
The AquaSox broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth thanks to some clutch two-out hitting. Donnie Walton started the rally with bloop single the other way to left field and went to second on an error. Then Eric Filia singled in Walton with the go-ahead run, and Nick Zammarelli followed with an RBI double to score Filia as Everett took a 3-1 lead.
Dugger allowed three hits and two walks. He struck out four in six shutout innings and left the game with a 1-0 lead.
But reliever Joselito Cano walked two hitters and allowed a ground-rule double to Jacob Bosiokovic to drive in Garrett Hampson to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
The AquaSox took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when David Greer walked and later scored on a two-out error.
The five-game series continues Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
