I was a freshman at Western Washington University when Gary Wright’s song “Dream Weaver” started getting lots of airplay.

It really wasn’t my style. I am a violinist and I dig acoustic music. I’ve never been much into pop or “soft” rock. Screamin’ guitars, yes. And I certainly was no fan of the synthesizer, which is the lead instrument in this song.

But there was something about “Dream Weaver” that I liked. Maybe it’s wrapped up in memories about the boy who I had a crush on that year. Or perhaps it had something to do with Wright’s connection to The Beatles or the fact that as a stressed-out frosh I enjoyed it as a goofy lullaby. Since then the song has been used appropriately in several movies including “Wayne’s World” and “Toy Story 3.”

If you liked it, for whatever corny reason, as I did, you have a chance to hear it from Wright himself at 7 tonight at the Historic Everett Theatre. Not only that, people who attend this show also will hear Al Stewart (“Year of the Cat”) and the “indiebilly” roots band The Empty Pockets from Chicago.

Curt Shriner, of Historic Everett Theatre, has done a good job of bringing in bands for the baby boomers, but this concert promises to be something many people might enjoy.

It sounds as if The Empty Pockets might change up the character of Stewart’s and Wright’s songs from the 1970s, including “Love is Alive” and “Time Passages.”

The band has shared the stage with the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Richie Furay (of the Buffalo Springfield), Dickey Betts, Dave Mason, Jason Mraz and Jimmy Cliff.

Stewart and Wright have been doing some touring together, but they perform with other musicians as well.

Stewart continues to record, and with Dave Nachmanoff he not long ago made the live acoustic album “Uncorked” — a look back to some of his lesser known music.
