Briefs: WSU hosted seminar on rare earth elements in Everett

Washington State University North Puget Sound at Everettt hosted a symposium for the Joint Center for the Deployment and Research of Earth-Abundant Materials. The symposium on Oct. 3 and 4 focused on the future of using earth abundant materials instead of rare earth elements, precious metals and so-called conflict minerals, which are essential to nearly all of the electronic devices people use each day.

Snohomish County retailers expected to hire thousands for holiday season

Washington retailers in 2016 will hire above last year’s holiday seasonal levels, according to economists with the state’s Employment Security Department. They predict more than 12,700 seasonal workers to be hired throughout this holiday season with about 5,321 coming from Snohomish and King Counties. Last year, employers hired 10,542 additional workers with 6,167 coming from Snohomish and King Counties.

Arlington, Monroe ranches join American Angus Association

Ebby Mountain Cattle Co. in Arlington and M&P in Monroe are the newest members of the American Angus Association, a national breed organization headquartered in Missouri. The association records ancestral information and keeps production records and genomic data on individual animals to develop industry-leading selection tools for its members to advance the beef cattle business.

Arlington adds Wi-Fi at Merchant’s Parking Lot

The city of Arlington has launched a free Wi-Fi hotspot for the public at 323 N. Olympic Ave., also known as the Merchant’s Parking Lot. This is the first free hotspot implemented by the City of Arlington and is a result of the America’s Best Communities competition. Darrington also recently installed a Wi-Fi hotspot at Old School Park.
