Mari Atkinson, the visual arts teacher at Olympic View Middle School, was honored as the Art Advocate of the Year by the Schack Art Center in Everett. Atkinson has been a member of the Schack Education Committee since 2010 and served as a lead instructor for teacher workshops. In addition, she helped Schack Art Center secure $135,000 in art education grants.

Meanwhile, Atkinson’s art students at Olympic View were selected to create part of this year’s holiday decorations at the governor’s mansion in Olympia.

Each year, teachers from around the state apply to have their students create ornaments from clay that are aligned with the year’s theme. This year, the theme was musical instruments.

For each ornament, students shaped wire around their instruments to represent music flowing out into the open air.
