Lake Stevens boys swimmers off to promising start

The Lake Stevens boys swimming and diving team has a nice mix of experience and youth. The Vikings return four swimmers and a diver who qualified for the Class 4A state meet last season, and have been bolstered by a large freshman class.

“The season couldn’t be going better,” Lake Stevens coach Brady Dykgraaf said. “We’ve already got five state times locked up, and that’s how many we had at the end of last season. Hard work is paying off, and a lot of the younger swimmers are growing up and ready to make a big jump.”

The Vikings are led by Miles Slater, Carter Walles, Quade McKenzie, Coleson Wynne and diver Riley Koon. All of them should be shoo-ins to return to state, and Dykgraaf is hoping that Nick Thayer and David Joo can qualify as well.

“They have big goals of breaking all three school relay records,” Dykgraaf said. “We’d still like to lock up a few more state times. There’s still a lot of season left. During the winter break, you usually see a lot of kids turn a corner.”
