EVERETT — A Tulalip-area man has admitted to shooting his adult son in 2015.

Gordon Ayars Jr. pleaded guilty in November to first-degree domestic-violence assault. He was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison.

Ayars was ordered to follow doctors’ advice and take his medications, court papers show. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after his arrest. Before release from prison, he must participate in a corrections program designed to help those with significant mental illness transition back to the community.

Ayars told the judge he was unaware of his condition before the shooting. He said he was “horrified” at what happened. His son was seriously injured.

Ayars faced up to 15 years under state guidelines. The defense attorney and prosecutors agreed to seek a shorter sentence. He had no previous criminal history.
