Bumpy ride on Fire Trail Road to get some attention

Street Smarts reader Kenneth Pettingill reached out to Snohomish County Public Works and to us about his concerns for 140th Street NE, also known as Fire Trail Road, which runs west of I-5 toward Kayak Point.

The road is pocked with potholes, cracks, dips and other signs of wear. “I have lived up in the Seven Lakes area since 1991 and this is the worst I have seen Fire Trail since the old gravel road days,” Pettingill said.

A sand and gravel pit operates on that road, bringing lots of heavy rigs. The company is required to keep the road clean, but not fill potholes.

Snohomish County Public Works did a drive-through of the road and spotted areas of concern, said Road Maintenance Operation Manager Cindy Higdon. When drier and warmer weather arrives, county crews plan to:

– More adequately fill potholes, which have been temporarily filled.

– Make permanent repairs to road edge failures with hot asphalt.

– Level the road surface where two survey markers cause dips in the center.

“We will continue to monitor this road,” Higdon said.
