Eight-run 1st dooms AquaSox in 12-4 loss to Hops

EVERETT — The Hillsboro Hops had an eight-run lead before the Everett AquaSox came to bat and were never threatened in a 12-4 win over the Frogs Saturday before 4,049 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Everett starter Cody Mobley (0-1) didn’t make it out of the first inning, though some bad luck played a role as Everett fell to 1-2 on the young season.

Billy Endris walked to lead off the game and Yan Sanchez followed with a single. Eudy Ramos then hit what appeared to be a tailor-made double play ball, but the ball hit the lip of the grass and bounced over shortstop Joseph Rosa’s head into center field for a bad-hop RBI single.

Then came a hit batter, a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single for another run before Mobley struck out the next two hitters. That was all for Mobley. He was replaced by Jose Santiago who promptly walked in two more runs before surrendering a bases-clearing double to Sanchez and Hillsboro led 8-0.

The AquaSox got two back in the bottom of the fourth on Joe Venturino’s first professional home run and an RBI single by Brayan Hernandez.

Everett added another in the fifth when Eugene Helder tripled and scored on Greifer Andrade’s RBI single. But the Frogs missed an opportunity to add on when they left the bases loaded.

Rosa hit a solo home run to right in the sixth to make it 8-4.

Endris had an RBI single before back-to-back errors led to three more runs coming home to push Hillsboro’s lead back to eight.

Hernandez, Helder and Andrade all finished with a pair of hits for Everett.

Santiago fanned four and allowed one earned run in 41⁄3 innings of relief.

The series resumes Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
