Eugene demolishes AquaSox 12-0 in must-have game for Everett

EVERETT — The AquaSox’s playoff chances were slim heading into Wednesday’s series finale against Eugene. Now they’re on complete life support.
Everett’s offense couldn’t take advantage of early scoring chances, and once Eugene starter Jesus Camargo settled in, he was dominant. The Emeralds logged back-to-back four-run innings, and the Frogs suffered a 12-0 loss in front of 3,013 fans during the club’s final regular-season home game.
Next Everett (18-17 second half, 35-38 overall), which snapped a three-game win streak, has a travel day before facing Spokane for a critical three-game series to end the regular season. The Frogs need to win all three and get some help to reach the postseason.
Camargo pitched five innings and struck out 10 batters while giving up one walk. At one point, Camargo struck out six straight. All told, Everett went down on strikes 14 times.
A mistake by starting pitcher Andres Torres led to an early 1-0 Emeralds lead. With runners on first and third, Torres was called for a balk, bringing home Zach Davis who led off the top of the first with a double.
Everett squandered a few early-scoring opportunities, leaving a runner stranded at third each of the first three innings. The Sox had runners at second and third with one out in the first and left the bases loaded in the second inning.
Eugene’s Jared Young extended the Emeralds’ lead to 2-0 in the top of the third with a no-doubter home run over the right-field wall.
Davis put the Emeralds in front 3-0 in the top of the fifth with a single to center field, scoring Chris Singleton from second. The hit ended Torres’ night.
The AquaSox starter lasted four innings, was charged with four runs on five hits, struck out two and walked three in his shortest outing since July 28.
David Hesslink replaced Torres and quickly allowed Eugene’s lead to swell to 6-0.
Young drove in a run with a single to right, and Austin Filiere followed with a two-run home run over the right-field wall. Filiere smiled as he rounded the bases, and he had good reason to given he and Hesslink were college teammates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Eugene continued to add runs in the sixth. Rafael Narea scored on a wild pitch before Michael Cruz launched a three-run homer over the right-center field wall to give the Emeralds a 10-0 lead. Singleton extended the Emerald’s lead to 12-0 with his first career home run — a two-run shot over the left-field wall.
