Retirement party for dogs
Carmen and Risa have lendt listening ears to young readers at the Mukilteo Library since 2008. The two dogs are now retiring. A farewell party is set for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd. Enjoy photo opportunities, refreshments and balloons.
The popular reading program will continue with other therapy dogs.

Prepare at ReadyFest
When disaster strikes, will you be ready? Learn how to prepare yourself, your family and your community at ReadyFest, a hands-on disaster preparedness open house sponsored by Snohomish County Fire District 1 on Wednesday in Edmonds. Drop by any time between 3 and 7 p.m. for the free open house at Edmonds Fire Station 17, 275 Sixth Ave. N.
Learn hands-only CPR, sample MREs, learn how to put together a “go bag” and turn off utilities, and much more.

Historic tree tour
An event to kick off Snohomish’s self-guided walking tour of historic trees has been scheduled for Oct. 7. A guide will lead the group through the historic district and talk about trees that have been in town for years. Walking tours are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Fred’s Rivertown Alehouse offered to serve lobster bisque at the kick-off party.
Meet at Cedar and Pearl streets near the Carnegie Building. Tour sign-up is at 10:30 a.m.

Learn to fight invasive weeds
Washington State University Extension hosts a hands-on, day-long program to teach people how to conquer invasive weeds, such as blackberries, ivy, holly, scotch broom, reed canary grass and knotweed. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 at New Tree Farm in Arlington.
Registration is required by Sept. 28. The cost is $35 per person, or $45 per pair.
Lessons will include which herbicides to use and how to use them, along with how to understand labels and pesticide laws. People can practice putting on protective gear, handling equipment, cleaning and storing it. There will be hands-on demonstrations of stem injections and cut stump treatments. Organic, chemical-free options for controlling weeds will be taught, too, including using a weed wrench, cutting, mowing, digging and sheet mulching.
