Foreign influence in elections — in 1796

The University of Washington’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a free presentation, “The Founding Fathers and Foreign Interference in U.S. Elections,” 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo.

In 1796 the French ambassador tried to influence the presidential election — going around Philadelphia and making it clear that France supported Jefferson over Adams. It so alarmed Washington and Hamilton that it influenced Washington’s farewell address. Speaker is James Rigali, who earned his Ph.D. in history at the UW.
