Dishing up civility at the Socrates Cafe
The Socrates Cafe, a facilitated group that seeks to use the Socratic method to guide civil conversations, meets next from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 (third Saturday) at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way. The gathering aims “to better understand human nature and become more empathetic people and more objective critical and creative inquirers.”

Join the Merrysville holiday parade
The annual Merrysville for the Holidays Electric Lights Parade is set for Dec. 2 along State Avenue in Marysville. Businesses, community groups and individuals are invited to take part. The deadline for applications is Nov. 21. Entry is $20.

Forest Service recruits for summer jobs
The U.S. Forest Service will accept applications Nov. 14-20 for seasonal spring and summer jobs in Oregon and Washington. Positions are available in multiple fields, including fire, recreation, natural resources, timber, engineering, visitor services and archaeology.
Applicants are encouraged to create a profile on usajobs.gov now to save time once the hiring process begins.

Korean War student art contest
Students in grades 6-12 have until the end of November to take part in a contest sponsored by the Office of Secretary of State’s Legacy Washington program. The “Korea 65” contest encourages students to explore the question of how the Korean War affects Washington state today. Entries can be submitted as writings, film projects or two-dimensional art.
The “Korea 65” project chronicles personal stories of the so-called “Forgotten War,” including that of Everett-trained Army nurse Barbara Jean Nichols, with physical and online exhibits.
