Orchestra’s Christmas concert is meant to brighten spirits

EVERETT — The concert won’t be your average Christmas offering.
Instead of traditional carols or popular holiday tunes, expect that what makes this Christmas concert special is that it is a mood enhancer. It’s time to celebrate, relax and enjoy.
The Pacifica Chamber Orchestra will perform Sunday afternoon in the beautiful sanctuary at First Presbyterian in Everett.
“Our Christmas concert will feature the joyful String Symphony No. 7 by Felix Mendelssohn,” said director and violinist Fred Chu.
Then the orchestra’s talented woodwind quintet will perform pieces by two contemporary American composers, David Maslanka and Valerie Coleman. “Those pieces are full of color,” Chu said. “The color of a festival.”
“Lady Radnor’ Suite” for strings by English composer Hubert Parry “is a perfect number that enhances the holiday spirit,” Chu said.
In addition, the chamber orchestra will perform Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Dance of the Skomorokhi” (tumblers, clowns) from the opera “The Snow Maiden.”
