Book sale in Arlington

The Friends of the Arlington Library’s monthly book sale is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. This month’s theme focuses on the holidays. The library is at 135 N Washington Ave.

Health care sign-up aid

Get help applying for Medicaid and low-cost health coverage plans, as well as help signing up for food and cash assistance programs, at drop-in events set for 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19 and Dec. 26, at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.

Public Hanukkah celebrations

A public menorah-lighting ceremony is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday outside Lynnwood City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W. It will feature speeches, klezmer music and treats. City Hall will be open if people need to escape the elements.

Another Hanukkah celebration is set for 4 p.m. Dec. 17 in downtown Everett and will feature an olive-press workshop, Hanukkah crafts for children and a menorah lighting, as well as treats and menorah kits. It’s being held at the Snohomish County administrative buildings at 3000 Rockefeller Ave. Both events are hosted by Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County. All are welcome.

Dry ice fun for kids

Kids ages 4-12 can explore some “Very Cool Dry Ice Science” at 1 p.m. Friday at the Sultan Library, 319 Main St. Learn what sublimation is, launch a rocket, witness a bubble growing by itself, hold a bubble and then watch it turn to smoke. Advance registration is required.

Can-to-Cane in Darrington

Santa will exchange candy canes for canned food and other nonperishable food donations during Santa’s Can-to-Cane Exchange, 6 p.m. Tuesday. Keep a lookout as Santa rides through town aboard a Darrington Fire District 24 fire engine. A community tree lighting will follow at 7 p.m. at North Counties Family Services, 1015 Seeman St.

Fulfill a wish for Christmas

A toy drive to fulfill “A Christmas Wish” for 600 children in Arlington and Darrington is under way. Make a monetary gift, or bring in an unwrapped gift to a drop-off location by Friday. Drop-off locations include the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, American Legion Post 76 and several local businesses. Banks and credit unions in both cities also have giving trees, where you can select a tag to buy gifts for a specific child.
