Cory West resigned as the Kamiak boys basketball coach Wednesday, and in a letter to the Herald cited a desire to spend more time with his family as the primary reason for stepping away after 10 seasons leading the Knights’ program.
“Since the birth of my son (in 2014), I have contemplated resignation and eventually came to the final decision that this would be my last season as the head coach,” West wrote. “With a lot of thought and contemplation, I realized that I want more time with my family.”
West, who became Kamiak’s head coach in 2008, led the Knights to the 4A District 1 tournament in each of the past eight seasons and Kamiak qualified for the regional round of the state tournament for the past three campaigns.
West’s final Kamiak team, led by two-time Herald Player of the Year Carson Tuttle, made the deepest postseason run of his tenure, beating Union in its first game at the Hardwood Classic to clinch the program’s first-ever berth in the state quarterfinal round.
The Knights finished the season with a record of 17-10, falling to Richland in the 4A quarterfinals and Skyview in a consolation game.
“Culture is the reason why the best organizations sustain success,” West wrote. “I feel that our coaching staff has helped create a culture of greatness; therefore, I’m confident that the Kamiak Knights program will continue to see growth and success based on the current leadership and organization of the feeder program, current players and high school administration.”
