Kamiak High School graduate Kayla Self worked in León, Spain, for an internship with the Consulate of Spain this summer.

Kayla Self, a rising sophomore at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and a resident of Mukilteo, was in León, Spain, for an internship with the Consulate of Spain this summer. Her work was supported the Levitt Center’s Public Service Internship Fund.

Self, who grew up listening to her Puerto Rican mother speak Spanish at home, connected to the opportunity through her past work with the Consul of Spain in Seattle. Along with assisting in the mayor’s office, the commerce department and the consulate’s office in León, she also worked at a local newspaper, where she wrote about a visit by Washington Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib and others.

Self is a graduate of Kamiak High School and Everett Community College’s Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA). In college, she is majoring in world politics with a concentration in Latin American and Caribbean studies. She hopes to work in international law.
